Wayne Rooney has been denied the chance to be part of Steve McClaren's first England squad through injury.
The Manchester United star has not been included in the 25-strong party to face Greece in next Wednesday's friendly international at Old Trafford because of a groin injury.
In any case Rooney is suspended for England's opening two games in the European Championships with Andorra and Macedonia next month as a result of his sending off against Portugal in the World Cup quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen.
And the Football Association will hear his appeal on Tuesday against a possible three match ban for a red card in United's pre-season clash with FC Porto.
But it is the injury which has stopped McClaren from selecting him against the Euro 2004 champions after consultations with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
McClaren said: "Why has Rooney been left out? He is injured. He has a groin injury. He is not training at the moment. Manchester United have a game on Saturday and he won't be playing in that.
"This ban is also hanging over his head as well. I think he can play next week and United are trying to get him fit for that.
"After discussions with Manchester United it was best felt, as he was suspended for the next two Euro games anyway, not to select Wayne - and I don't think he would be fit for the Greece game anyway."
