Bolton are aiming to seal a deal for Deportivo La Coruna striker Diego Tristan before the end of the month.
The Trotters are understood to have agreed a £2.5million deal with the Spanish Primera Liga club and are now talking to the former Spain international.
But Tristan, 30, will be required to prove he is fit enough to cope with the rigours of the Premiership before Sam Allardyce commits to a transfer.
Allardyce's top target remains Fenerbahce ace Nicolas Anelka but the Turkish club are not prepared to relinquish the Frenchman until after Champions League qualifying is completed.
PSV Eindhoven frontman Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is proving too expensive, leaving Allardyce to pursue Tristan.
