DUO OUT FOR CAPITAL CLASH

Rooney - start of three-match ban

Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes both miss Manchester United's trip to London to face Charlton as they start respective three-match bans.

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Ryan Giggs recovers from the heavy knock he took in the win over Fulham on Sunday, when skipper Gary Neville only completed 45 minutes.

Gabriel Heinze and Nemanja Vidic (both knee) are absent for the Red Devils, as are Michael Carrick (ankle) and Alan Smith, who did return to reserve-team action on Monday night after his double leg break. .

Charlton will be without Djimi Traore as the defender serves a one-match suspension.

Gonzalo Sorondo is likely to fill in at left-back, with youngster Nathan Ashton another option for manager Iain Dowie.

Costa Rica winger Cristian Bolanos is still awaiting clearance on a work permit, while American defender Cory Gibbs (knee) and winger Jerome Thomas (foot) are both longer-term absentees.
