MAGPIES AND TROTTERS SPY KERZHAKOV

Kerzhakov - wanted by Newcastle and Bolton

Newcastle are set to battle it out with Bolton for the signing of Russian striker Alexander Kerzhakov.

The Magpies missed out on bringing Dirk Kuyt to St James' Park with the Dutch international now on the brink of joining Liverpool but boss Glenn Roeder has now turned his attention to Zenit St Petersburg frontman Kerzhakov.

The 23-year-old has recently been linked with a move to Bolton Wanderers, who came up against the rising star in last season's UEFA Cup.

Zenit are seeking around £8 million for their prolific striker, who was voted Russian Player of the Year last season as he notched up 17 goals.

Kerzhakov has been compared to Andriy Shevchenko and has scored 8 times in 33 internationals but Sevilla are also another team interested in aquiring his services.

Wanderers have also been linked with Deportivo La Coruna's Diego Tristan and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink this week.

But according to the Bolton Evening News, Allardyce is unlikely to clinch the signing of Vennegoor of Hesselink despite reportedly offering PSV Eindhoven £5 million.

Sam Allardyce saw the Dutch striker in action against Ajax on Sunday but his club are hoping to hold out for the full £5.4million.
