Van der Sar has been United's best since Schmeichel
Manchester United are set to offer goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar a one-year contract extension.
The 35-year-old Dutch international joined from Fulham at the start of last season and his current deal at old Trafford expires next summer.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We have to pay attention to his age and it depends how he does next season.
"But he was a terrific addition to our squad last season, his form was superb," added Ferguson.
In his first season at Old Trafford Van der Sar proved himself to be United's best keeper since Peter Schmeichel retired in 1999.
Fabien Barthez, Mark Bosnich and Tim Howard are among those who have tried to fill the gap left by the great Dane, but Van der Sar coped easily with the demands of playing for United.
As he looks for a long-term successor for Van der Sar, Ferguson is in the process of trying to sign West Brom's Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, while youngster Ben Foster will spend another season on loan at Watford to gain experience.
Ferguson has also loaned Tim Howard out to Everton for next season after the American suffered a loss of form last term.
The United boss said: "We're trying to consolidate our goalkeeping options and by next season I think we will be in a stronger position than at any time since the Peter Schmeichel era.
"We need experienced cover and the fact that Tomasz has played a full season in the Premiership gives him greater all-round experience at this moment in time."
